Are manual car driving lessons available?

Quick answer

DrivEASY no longer provides driving lessons in manual vehicles. All lessons are now conducted in automatic cars.

However, if you pass your driving test in an automatic car in South Australia, your licence still allows you to drive both manual and automatic vehicles. There are no restrictions between car types on a standard Class C (Car) licence.

Even though we no longer teach in manuals, our instructors are happy to answer any manual driving questions during your automatic lessons.

Why do we no longer offer manual lessons?

Over time, learner demand for automatic vehicles has significantly increased. Most new drivers now learn and test in automatic cars, and many modern vehicles are automatic.

Focusing on automatic cars allows us to:

  • Simplified learning experience: Automatic cars allow learners to focus more on key driving skills like hazard perception, safe decision-making, and road awareness without the added pressure of clutch control and gear changes.
  • Faster progress for most learners: Without the extra challenge of learning manual transmission, many students progress faster and gain confidence sooner in an automatic.
  • Test licencing flexibility: In South Australia, passing your driving test in an automatic still allows you to drive a manual car legally. Your licence has no transmission restrictions, giving you freedom and flexibility.
  • Changing demand: Most learner drivers now prefer to learn in automatic cars, reflecting a broader industry trend as more modern vehicles, especially hybrids and EVs, are automatic by default.

While we understand some learners may still be curious about manual driving, our experienced instructors can help you understand the fundamentals, even during an automatic lesson.
